Austria's Lukas Klapfer debuted in the World Cup in Sapporo in 2005 and had first successes in the season of 2008/2009 when he achieved his first podium result in Seefeld, capturing a second rank. After that, he had to make it through a long patch without success moments in the World Cup before setting his first career victory in Schonach in early 2015, also coming out of the season as number 10 in the overall World Cup standings.

Klapfer's upward trend had started in the season of 2013/14 when he finished on the overall 13th rank and also took home a team bronze medal from the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.He followed through with two more third ranks in the winter of 2015/16, finally setting at an overall ninth position in the World Cup standings.
