Oberwiesenthal is a town with about 2.500 inhabitants in Saxony, Germany. It is located on the border to the Czech Republic with 19 kilometres to go to Annaberg-Buchholz to the North and 23 kilometres to Karlovy Vary to the South. With an elevation of 914 metres above sea level, it is Germany's highest town. Oberwiesenthal has the biggest skiing area in Eastern Germany and serves an Olympic training centre. Oberwiesenthal also houses the "Elite School of Winter Sports" where future athletes enjoy excellent training facilities and fostering possibilities.

As early as 1911, Oberwiesenthal had a ski jumping hill where the German Championships in this year were won with a jump of 12 metres. The old Fichtelberg-hill was inagurated in 1938 was was - with some modifications - used until 1972 when it was completely demolished. The new Fichtelberg-hill was finished in 1974 and again remodelled in 1991 and also equipped with a ceramic track and plastic mats for the summer use. From 2000 until 2002, the hill profile was completely changed again. The hill size now lies at 106 metres. During the summer of 2013, further improvements were conducted, among others equipping the hill with a new inrun-track.

The cross-coutry races take part in the Sparkassen Skiarena which was reconstructed and extended in 2004. Now the spectators can find plenty of room on the ranks. The Sparkassen Skiarena can also be used as a biathlon facility. During the Summer Grand Prix, the roller-ski track leads directly through the town centre which results in a great backdrop for athletes and spectators.
