General Information
Otepää, with a population of 4000 inhabitants, is situated in Southern Estonia and it was first mentioned in 09.03.1116. Otepää, which in Estonian means "bear's head" received its name after the shape of the castle hill - which reminds you of a bear's head.It is often called as the Winter capital of Estonia since it has the best skiing resorts in the country and many international events are held here. The small city attracts skiers, snowboarders, snowmobile riders, snow tubers and sledgers from all over Estonia and beyond. Otepää also has strong connections to the Estonian flag which was blessed for the first time in church of Otepää in 1884.
The venue
Otepää's ski centre is called Tehvandi and features a HS 100 metre normal hill plus a big cross-country stadium. An old HS 70 jumping hill was inaugurated in 1968 and used until the renovation of the facility in 1993/94. Before the FIS Junior World Championships could be held in 2011, the hill was demolished and a new K-90 jumping hill built including plastic covers for summer jumping and a ceramic inrun track.
The cross-country stadium is regularly in use for Cross-Country World Cups, while the Nordic Combined World Cup will have its maiden edition in Estonia in 2017/2018.
