Norway is hoping to defend its Olympic title in the team Gundersen LH/4x5km, which is held on Thursday 22 February at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre and Alpensia Cross-Country Centre.
After wins in 1998 and 2014, Norway is now aiming to claim a record third Olympic gold medal in the team event. Austria (2) and Japan (2) are the only other National Olympic Committees with multiple Olympic titles.
Defending champion Norway could become the third NOC after Austria (2006-2010) and Japan (1992-1994) to claim team gold in back-to-back Olympic Winter Games.
Austria and Germany are the only NOCs to have reached the podium in the team event in each of the last four Olympic Winter Games (2002-2014), the longest medal streaks in this event.
Germany won both previous Nordic combined events at PyeongChang 2018. It could join Finland (in 2002) as only NOCs to have won three gold medals in this sport at one Winter Games.
Germany has won four medals in total in Nordic combined at PyeongChang 2018. It could become the first NOC to win five medals in this sport at one Winter Games.
Eric FRENZEL (GER) is tied with Samppa LAJUNEN (FIN) on five Olympic medals in Nordic combined. Only Felix GOTTWALD (AUT, seven) has won more.
FRENZEL can join GOTTWALD, LAJUNEN and Ulrich WEHLING (GER) on a record three Olympic gold medals in Nordic combined.
FRENZEL finished on the podium in each of the two previous Nordic combined events in PyeongChang 2018. The last athlete to reach the podium in all three Nordic combined events in one Games was Johnny SPILLANE (USA) at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Björn KIRCHEISEN (GER) and retired Mario STECHER (AUT) are both on a record four Olympic medals in the team event. They both were on the podium in each of the last four Olympic Winter Games.
