COC-M: Thomas Jöbstl keeps on winning, Gerstgraser takes overall
Mar 11, 2019·Nordic CombinedThe men undertook a 2 jump, 15 km of skiing Final Individual Gundersen event on their final day of the COC season and it was Japan’s Hidefumi Denda who came out on top of the ski jumping result list after two jumps of 95 and 96.5 metres. A point total of 245.8 had the Japanese starting 39 seconds ahead of Sindre Ure Søvtik. The Norwegian showed 94.5 and 93 metres (236.1 p.) and had a healthy head start on Japanese youngster Daimatsu Takehana (233 p.), who was allowed to leave the start line +0:51 seconds after his teammate.
Go Sonehara was another Japanese in the running for a good position from rank four (+1:08) before Alexander Pashaev was the first Russian to go out on the track at +01:44.
15 km of skiing later, it was Austria’s Thomas Jöbstl, who was able to climb on to the top spot of the podium once more. Starting from the eighth position, the Austrian moved steadily through the field and in the end, the fifth-fastest time of 38:02.0 was enough to have him crossing the finish line 34.1 seconds ahead of Czech World Cup athlete Tomas Portyk. Portyk had started the race at exactly the same time as Jöbstl but was no match for the fast Austrian in the end. However, he managed to beat Germany’s Jakob Lange by 1.7 seconds at the finish line.
Philipp Orter claimed rank four, jumping winner Denda managed to hang on to the fifth place and Italy’s Raffaele Buzzi was the fastest athlete of the field. He improved the 29th position to the final sixth rank.

With the last results in, it was still Austria’s Paul Gerstgraser, who topped the overall standings, even though he was competing in the World Cup in Oslo on the same weekend. Gerstgraser won with 800 points, while closest pursuer Leif Torbjørn Næsvold from Norway ended up with 644 points. He beat third-ranked Thomas Jöbstl by one point in the end, who in turn kicked Norwegian Sindre Ure Søtvik off the overall podium by one point as well.
The Nations Cup went to Norway with 4247 points, Austria was second with 3638 and Germany third with 3010.
