Nordic Combined ladies and men in action at OPA Games

Kandersteg (SUI) hosted the annual OPA Alpencup Games 2019 on the past weekend. An individual event each were on schedule for men an ladies, held in two different age categories and one team event for men and one for ladies had athletes of all ages start together.

Cindy Haasch (GER) and Lisa Hirner (AUT) win ladies’ events

Slovenia’s Nika Prevc convinced on the HS 67 jumping hill in Kandersteg in the younger girls’ (born in 2004, 5 and 6) jumping event and claimed a 14 second head start on Germany’s Trine Göpfert and held a 31-second-advantage on Youth Cup overall winner Cindy Haasch. Haasch showed the best cross-country time in the following 2 km cross-country race and claimed yet another victory, +11.4 seconds ahead of teammate Trine Göpfert. Nika Prevc secured the third place by finishing +24.7 seconds after the winner.

Continental Cup podium decorated athlete Lisa Hirner from Austria claimed the win in the Youth category (years of birth 2002-03). The strong jumper achieved a 15-second lead over Germany’s Jenny Nowak with a 71 metre jump and left the start line 20 seconds earlier than Italy’s Annika Sieff, who was third in the jumping ranking. In the race, Hirner faced a fast pursuer in Italy’s Daniela Dejori, who came charging from position seven and finished only 1.5 seconds after the Austrian in the end. Teammate Annika Sieff ended up on the third place, +4.0 seconds after Hirner.

Severin Reiter (AUT) and Nicolas Pfandl take wins in men’s competitions

On the men’s side, Czech Republic’s Jiri Konvalinka was the jumping winner in the Children’s category after showing a 71.5-metre performance. This translated into a 19-second head start on Severin Reiter and France’s Clovis Pagnier followed 36 seconds later. Konvalinka was no match for pursuing Reiter on the track and lost the first place to the Austrian, who accomplished a 19.7 second advantage on Konvalinka at the finish line. The fastest man on track was Austria’s Paul Walcher, who charged from position eleven to the final third place, +20.6 seconds after his teammate Reiter.

Stefan Peer was the best jumper among the older boys and claimed a narrow 4-second head start on teammate Nicolas Pfandl after both athletes jumped to 69.5 metres. Slovenia’s Matic Hladnik was third and started this race seven seconds after Peer. The second-fastest cross-country time had Pfandl surging to a 32.2 second victory over Iacopo Bartolas, who improved from position nine to the second rank. Czech Republic’s Lukas Kohlberger claimed the third place, +43.2 seconds after Pfandl.

Germany II, I and Austria I medal in Ladies’ Team Event

A fantastic jump of 69.5 metres by Anna Jökle plus solid performances of her teammates Emilia Görlich and Cindy Haasch put Team Germany II on the top spot of the jumping result list with a point total of 296.7. This translated into a 12-second head start on their teammates Maria Gerboth, Emily Schneider and Jenny Nowak from Team Germany I. Strong jumpers Prevc, Vercic and Volavsek from Slovenia held the third position and took up their 3x 2 km race only one second behind Germany I, with team Austria I following hot on their heels only 5 seconds later.

The ladies from Team Germany II showed no signs of weakness on the track and extended their lead to a clear 38.2 second advantage at the finish line. Team Austria I and Italy I were able to pass Slovenia I on the track and so the Austrian Team claimed bronze with a delay of one minute and 37 seconds. Italy crossed the finish line at +2:04.3.

The men’s Team Event had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions.
