Austria wins big at OPA Games in Villach

Last weekend, the Nordic Combined events of the OPA Games were held in Villach (AUT) and the local heroes took four of the six awarded gold medals.

In the Youth I Girls category, Laura Pletz (AUT) continued her winning streak and took the gold medal ahead of Germany’s Nathalie Armbruster (+2.9) and teammate Anja Rathgeb (+8.8). Emilia Görlich (GER) also kept her FIS Youth Cup winning streak alive in the Youth II Girls category and took the win ahead of Italy’s Annika Sieff (+12.9) and fellow German Marie Nähring (+22.8).

The boys’ events were an all-Austrian affair with Paul Walcher taking the win in the Youth I Boys category ahead of German duo Benedikt Gräbert (+0.5) and Mika Wunderlich (+33.5), while older teammate Samuel Lev won the gold medal in the Youth II Boys category. Italy’s Iacopo Bartolas came in second (+21.2) and France’s Marco Heinis finished 30.6 seconds after Lev on rank 3.

A three-woman team event was won by Germany I (Nähring, Armbruster, Görlich) ahead of Germany II (Hieber, Burger, Haasch) and Austria I (Mentil, Pletz, Rathgeb). Austria I (Rathgeb, Pfandl, Lev, Walcher) stood at the top of the podium in the men’s team event. Germany I (Brückl, Schula, Gehring, Sommerfeldt) took the silver medal while the Czech Republic (Konvalinka, Sudek, Dolezal, Simek) battled to bronze.
