Fabian Rießle repeats German national title(s)
Oct 21, 2019·Nordic CombinedFabian Rießle defended his German summer national title. Together with Manuel Faißt, the 28-year-old also repeated the victory of Team Black Forest in the Team Sprint event.
Rießle and Faißt had a close fight for the individual title as only two seconds separated the two after the jumping part of the event on the HS 140 Vogtlandarena jumping hill in Klingenthal. The race took part in Johanngeorgenstadt and next to this new-found jumping strength, Rießle was able to play on his regular cross-country prowess as well. After 10 km of racing, in 27:07.9, Rießle crossed the finish line in the first position.
Johannes Rydzek, who recovered from a stress injury in his foot over the summer, started his race in sixth position with a delay of 44 seconds and delivered the fastest cross-country time. 26:37.5 meant Rydzek crossed the finish line in second, beating out jumping winner Faißt by 22 seconds. Reigning Junior World Champion Julian Schmid claimed position four, Terence Weber was fifth, Jakob Lange sixth while Nordic Combined superstar Eric Frenzel only achieved rank seven, handicapped by a 15th position and 1+:45 of time delay after the jumping part.
David Mach claims junior title
In the junior men’s category, David Mach was victorious. In the senior category, his result meant rank eight, +1:48.5 after the winner Rießle. Mach showed an even performance with the best junior jump (120.4 p.) and the second-best cross-country time of the junior athletes. He celebrated a clear win of 51.6 second of advantage on runner-up Lenard Kersting. Kersting was the fastest skier but had a handicap of +1:51 to contend with at the start line of the race. He succeeded in defending the silver medal against local hero Nick Siegemund vom Klingenthal, who finally finished his race two seconds after Kersting.
Faißt / Rießle best duo on the hill and track
Manuel Faißt and Fabian Rießle were the best duo on the hill and track with the jumping win (246.3 p.) and the third-fastest cross-country time (30:57.7) in the final Team Sprint event. However, they faced stiff competition from Team Saxony with Eric Frenzel and Terence Weber, who were the second-best jumpers (243.4 p.) but also the second-best skiers (30:45.8). In the end, 1.1 seconds separated the teams at the finish line but gave Fabian Rießle his second national title in as many days. Julian Schmid and Johannes Rydzek started for Bavaria and finished third, +16.9 after the winners. David Mach/Jakob Lange were fourth, Tim Kopp and Martin Hahn fifth and Simon Hüttel claimed rank six with his teammate Wendelin Thannheimer.
