Historic premiere for Nordic Combined World Cup
Dec 16, 2020·Nordic CombinedOn the 18th of December, 2020, the Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined World Cup will include a women’s event for the first time. After years of focussed development, the big historic step is finally here: 32 women from 9 nations are entered for their World Cup debut in Nordic Combined.
Ramsau am Dachstein (AUT) had taken over hosting one event after the original premiere weekend in Lillehammer (NOR) had to be postponed earlier in the season.
The premiere will include Tara Geraghty-Moats (USA), the most successful female Nordic Combined athlete of the last years. She will be challenged by other big names of the sport: reigning Junior World Champion Jenny Nowak (GER), Ayane Miyazaki (JPN), who won the first-ever Junior World Championships gold in 2019, YOG 2020 gold medallist Lisa Hirner (AUT) and Norwegian team leader Gyda Westvold Hansen as well as Summer Grand Prix 2019 winner Stefaniya Nadymova from Russia.
The women will compete in an Individual Gundersen event with a 5 km cross-country race on the 18th and share the venue with their colleagues from Women’s Ski Jumping, who are set to have their own event in the afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, the Nordic Combined men have two Individual Gundersen events scheduled.
Here, the smaller hill will give an added chance to the stronger cross-country skiers to challenge World Cup leader Jarl Magnus Riiber on the tough track in Ramsau. Last year, Germany’s Vinzenz Geiger became the first athlete to wrestle a victory from Riiber in Ramsau. This year, 14 nations are entered for the men’s events, including all top stars from the Ruka weekend.
