The World Cup Opener 2020 in Ruka (FIN) is a go. Snow Controllers Pekka Hyvärinen and Annmari Viljanmaa have given green light at yesterday’s control deadline.

Even though the beginning of this year’s winter season has recorded the warmest ever in Finland, the Organising Committee has been able to optimise a short period of cold temperatures to make artificial snow and also last year’s snow depots maintained well over the summer

Taken together, the snow depot is sufficient to prepare the jumping hill and both foreseen 2.5 kilometre cross-country courses and the stadium area for the FIS Cross-Country, Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping World Cups.

“The weather forecast during the upcoming days is still warm, but it will get colder again at the end of the next week and then it should be possible to produce snow again”, says Annmari Viljanmaa, Snow Controller for Cross-Country. “The main focus is to prepare the best possible conditions on the competition course and then the testing area and warm up course if possible.”

“If nothing unexpected happens, there will be snow enough for the preparation of the jumping hill for the World Cup competitions from 26.-29.11.2020, and we welcome teams to Ruka”, her colleague for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined, Pekka Hyvärinen adds.
