Coming up: Nordic Combined Seefeld TRIPLE 2022

The ninth edition of the Nordic Combined TRIPLE will take place from 27. – 30. January 2022. Once again, Seefeld (AUT) which wasn’t the host only once due to the 2019 Nordic Ski World Championships, will hold the traditional season highlight.

Three exciting days in Austria can be expected with a multitude of potential podium contenders. After his back injury and a break of several weeks, Jarl Magnus Riiber is expected to return to the World Cup to defend his first TRIPLE title from 2021.

Another favorite is of course Eric Frenzel, who with five TRIPLE trophies in a row from 2014-2018 has good chances for the podium again this season.

On top, the German legend has won an astonishing 13 World Cups here and his tally of 16 podiums in Seefeld is most for any athlete in any city in the history of the World Cup.

Local hero Johannes Lamparter, who took over the overall World Cup lead from Riiber two weeks ago after his double victory in Klingenthal (GER), will start in the yellow bib and do everything in his power to defend his lead against the Norwegian.

Also 2018 winner Akito Watabe, who finished on the podium in all three competitions last year, will fight for a good ranking in the final rehearsal for the Olympic Winter Games.

Germanys Vinzenz Geiger as well as Finn Ilkka Herola, who who dropped out of the competitions in Klingenthal after a positive COVID-19 test and now wants to win back his red bib as Best Skier from Johannes Rydzek, are also candidates for a top 3 ranking.

But before the weekend in the WM Arena Seefeld starts, unfortunately without spectators due to the pandemic situation, some updates to the TRIPLE format have been made.

From now on, the TRIPLE consists of three Individual competitions with a 7.5 km, a 10 km and a 12.5 km cross-country race. 
Furthermore, the field of participants was increased to 50 athletes on the last competition day, only 40 athletes were allowed to start in the past.

The biggest rule change, however, concerns the scoring system. 
Fixed points will be given to the top 15 athletes on each day, which they will bring with them to the next days competition. Main reason for the change is to bring the competitors closer together and therefore achieve an exciting Final on Day 3.

Example: 
Friday’s winner will start the jumping part on Saturday with 6,2 pts. The 16th athlete from the Friday competition will start with 0 points on Saturday. The same applies for the event on Day 3.

The first athlete crossing the finish line on Sunday is the overall winner of the TRIPLE.
