Lamparter secures first World Cup victory
Jan 08, 2022·Nordic CombinedJohannes Lamparter secured his maiden World Cup victory in Val di Fiemme today!
The Austrian was already in the lead after the Ski Jumping competition on the HS 106 in Predazzo (ITA) this morning and defended his lead also through the cross-country race in the afternoon.
Under winterly conditions and low temperatures the Austrian jumped the furthest distance of the day with 105.5 meters (139.5 pts) in the morning and took the lead. Therefore the 20 year old was the first one to start into the 10 km at Lago di Tesero.
Rank 2 after jumping went to Eric Frenzel from Germany, who landed at 105 meters (136.1 pts) and went into the course 14 seconds after Lamparter. Jens Luraas Oftebro (101 mts, 135.1 pts) placed third with a 18 second backlog to the leader.
A total of 17 athletes went into the cross-country race within the first minute, therefore a tight fight for the podium could be expected.
Lamparter showed a strong performance on cross-country skis and managed to keep his pursuers at a distance. The chasing group around Eric Frenzel and Vinzenz Geiger from Germany as well as Jens Luraas Oftebro and Mario Seidl lost two seconds on Lamparter in the first 2.5 km.
The Austrian was not ready to surrender his lead, even if the pursuers did everything in their power to catch up with him. After 6.2 km their gap melted down to only 8.3 sec, while the gap between the second group of pursuers was already 45.5 seconds at this point.
A close battle for the podium was to be expected when all four pursuers went into the final lap together.
At this point, Lamparter could no longer be overtaken, so the question remained who would take the other two podium places.
In the end, the Germans were able to break away from the Austrian and Norwegian and hit the home straight together.
In a tight sprint, Geiger was ahead of the game and beat his team-mate by 0.2 seconds, 16.5 seconds behind Lamparter, who secured his first ever World Cup victory.
