Lillehammer (NOR): Riiber wins at 100th World Cup start
Dec 04, 2022·Nordic CombinedJarl Magnus Riiber secured his 52nd World Cup victory in Lillehammer (NOR).
The current Overall World Cup leader was already on first rank after the Ski Jumping competition on the Lysgårdsbakken HS 140 this morning.
In minus degrees, the Norwegian jumped 140 meters (150.3 pts) and took the lead on home soil. Therefore, he was the first one to start into the 10 km this afternoon.
The second place after jumping went to Mario Seidl from Austria, who reached 139 meters (146.2 pts) and went into the course 16 seconds after the Norwegian.
Yesterday’s winner Jens Luraas Oftebro (138.5 mts, 143.3 pts) placed third, 28 seconds behind.
During the 10 km cross-country race, Riiber kept his pursuers at a safe distance.
At the 2.5 km mark the Norwegian was already 28 seconds ahead of the Oftebro and Seidl, who went through the race together.
Like yesterday, a big pursuing group including Vinzenz Geiger tried to catch up to the front and reduced the distance to 1:08 minutes at the 4.3 km intermediate point.
While Riiber's victory was already certain when he entered the last lap because he was uncatchable in front of Oftebro and Seidl, the Norwegian pulled away from the Austrian and was clearly on course for the podium.
A motivated group approached from behind at the 9.3 km mark with Laurent Muhlethaler (+1:05.6 min), Matteo Baud (+1:06 min) and Franz-Josef Rehrl (+1:06.6 min), which wanted to drive out the Austrian from his podium position.
But when entering the stadium, the first group of pursuers, including Seidl, was caught up and had to admit defeat to Vinzenz Geiger, who proofed his sprinting strength one more time.
Riiber secured the next World Cup victory and defended his yellow bib against teammate Oftebro (+47.5 sec) in second place, while Geiger (+1:02.7 min) placed third again.
