Julian Schmid secured his maiden World Cup victory in Ruka (FIN) today.

After the Ski Jumping competition on the Rukatunturi HS 142, Ryota Yamamoto was in the lead.

In winterly conditions and minus degrees the Japanese jumped the furthest distance of the day with 143.5 meters (159.4 pts) and took the lead. Therefore, he was the first one to start into the 5 km race at the Kilparata Course this afternoon.

Rank 2 after jumping went to Julian Schmid from Germany, who landed on 142.5 meters (157.5 pts) and went into the course only 8 seconds after Yamamoto.

PCR winner Mario Seidl (135.5 mts, 148.5 pts) placed third with a 44 second distance to the leader.

Due to the short distance of only 5 km, a tight fight for the victory could be expected.
Schmid closed the gap to Yamamoto already on the first round and took over the lead (+0.4 sec) after 2.5 km. Meanwhile, Oftebro caught Mario Seidl and placed third (+22.7 sec) after the first half of the distance.
The positions didn’t change for the rest of the race and led to Schmid securing his first World Cup victory and taking over the Overall ranking and yellow bib as well.
The German reached the finish line 5.9 sec before Yamamoto on rank 2 and Oftebro (+11 sec) on the third place.
Top favorite Jarl Magnus Riiber was already out of the podium fight after the Ski Jumping competition, placing 18th, 2:09 min behind. He skied up to rank 14 in the end (+1:21 min), with the fastest skiing time of the day.
