Schonach (GER): Lamparter wins, first podium for Mühlethaler

Johannes Lamparter secured the victory of today’s second Individual Gundersen in Schonach (GER).

Before, Ryota Yamamoto was in the lead after the Ski Jumping competition this morning.

Under foggy conditions the Japanese, who holds the hill record in Schonach, jumped the furthest distance of the day with 106.5 meters (144.5 pts) at the Langenwaldschanze HS 100 and took the lead. Due to some health issues, the current Best Jumper did not start the cross-country race in the afternoon and therefore couldn’t use his lead to collect more World Cup points.

Rank 2 after jumping went to Mario Seidl from Austria, who landed at 102 meters (136.1 pts), while his team mate and Overall World Cup leader Johannes Lamparter (104 mts, 136.0 pts) placed third. With Yamamoto not on start, the two Austrians went into the race 34 seconds after the starting clock went off, as the first athletes on track.

Lamparter and Seidl were closely followed by Yoshito Watabe (+1.5 km) who showed a strong performance on skis and stayed with them untilt he 2.5 km mark.

Meanwhile, the strong skiers Laurent Mühlethaler (+16.9 sec), Kristjan Ilves (+17.6 sec), Jens Luraas Oftebro (+18.7 sec), Akito Watabe (+19.2 sec) and Julian Schmid (+19.6 sec) rushed in from behind.

In the second lap, Lamparter launched an attack on the first uphill, which neither Seidl nor Watabe could follow.

The large chasing group (+19.3 sec) caught up first Watabe and then Seidl before the 5km Intermediate point.

In the last lap it got exciting again when Oftebro managed to catch up with Lamparter, so that they turned into the home stretch together.

In an exciting finish sprint, the Austrian narrowly prevailed and clinched his next World Cup victory, while Oftebro (+1.6 sec) took second place.

With another gripping sprint, there was a hard fight for third place.

Laurent Mühlethaler (+12.9 sec) from France beat Julian Schmid (+13.6 sec) and secured the first World Cup podium of his career.

With his victory, Johannes Lamparter is also the winner of the German Trophy 2023 ahead of Julian Schmid and Jens Luraas Oftebro.
