Jan Ziobro wins the qualification

Jan Ziobro won the qualification for the first of two FIS Ski Jumping World Cup competitions in PyeongChang (KOR). The 26-year-old from the club WKS Zakopane, posted a jump of 134.5 m and scored 131.1 points. Behind the Pole, Slovenia's Anze Lanisek and Ziobro's teammate Dawid Kubacki came in second and third.
For most of the athletes the day in PyeongChang started with a premiere. For the first time they had the chance to jump on the impressive facility in the Alpensia Resort. First the athletes could test the HS 109 hill in three official training rounds, in the evening the official training and the qualification were held on the HS 140 large hill. With bright sunshine and good wind conditions all the trainings and the qualification could be carried out without any problems. "That's really a very impressive facility", the athletes agreed after their first impressions of next year's Olympic venue.
Besides the Top 3, Norway's Andreas Stjernen and veteran Noriaki Kasai showed strong performances and finished fourth and fifth. For Stephan Leyhe, who replaces Markus Eisenbichler on the German team, the sixth place was a great start as well. Also very good for Germany: Andreas Wank and Karl Geiger in ninth and tenth.
Markus Eisenbichler returned home after the competitions in Sapporo in order to train at home for the Nordic World Championships in Lahti starting next week.
Robert Johansson of Norway is getting better and better. He had a strong jump in the qualification and was seventh, followed by the best Russian, Evgeniy Klimov.
It was a disappointing day for the hosting team, as no Korean athlete could qualify for the competition.
Peter Prevc, Maciej Kot and Kamil Stoch, the three winners of last weekend's events in Sapporo (JPN), were the best of the already pre-qualified athletes. All three are among the top contenders in PyeongChang. The fans can look forward to an exciting test for the next Olympic Winter Games.
The first of the two competitions starts on Wednesday at 12:00 pm CET (8:00 pm local time).
