Kamil Stoch and Piotr Zyla secure 1-2 finish for Poland
Aug 31, 2018·Ski JumpingOverall World Cup winner Kamil Stoch of Poland took a clear win in this summer's first individual FIS Grand Prix competition. In front of a sold-out crowd in Wisla, the three-time Olympic champion came in ahead of his teammate Piotr Zyla and Norway's Halvor Egner Granerud.
Kamil Stoch jumped on 132 m and 126.5 m (280.6 points) in front of 10 000 enthusiastic fans and had a lead of 8.3 points over the second-placed Piotr Zyla. "The summer season is difficult. I know I have a lot of work to do in order to jump on the level I wish to be on in the upcoming winter. It takes a lot of energy. My jumps are technically good, but I'm always looking for room for improvement. Strong jumps give me self-confidence", said the winner.
Piotr Zyla showed a strong performance as well but wasn't able to beat his teammate today: "My jumps were okay today, but Kamil was simply better. I have been jumping well the whole preparation period and I am satisfied with the result.
Dawid Kubacki was fourth and completed the Polish success in this home event. Of course, the mood of the fans and the entire Polish team was excellent after the competition.
For 22-year-old Halvor Egner Granerud of Norway, this was the first ever podium finish in a Grand Prix. Many experts think that the calm man of the Asker Skiklubb has a successful future ahead of him. "It's nice to finally be on the podium. The first jump was quite good, I messed up a little bit with my skis after the take-off, the second jump was really good. So far the summer has been going well for me, I didn't have any injuries or any major problems and I was jumping okay all summer so far", said the young Norwegian.
Kilian Peier of Switzerland also showed a very strong performance and came in fifth. He has already indicated his improvement with a double victory at the COC opener in Kranj (SLO) two weeks ago. With Gregor Deschwanden in 24th, another Swiss athlete made the Top 30 today.
Junshiro Kobayashi was the best of the Japanese team in sixth and once proved that he is among the best and that he can do especially well on the Adam-Malysz-hill in Wisla, where he took his first ever World Cup win in November 2017.
Best German was Karl Geiger in seventh. Richard Freitag in 18th, Andreas Wellinger in 27th and Stephan Leyhe in 29th completed the result of the German team.
Youngster Timi Zajc was the best Slovene in ninth. After struggling a bit at the beginning of the weekend, Stefan Kraft came in on a good tenth place. Andreas Kofler made a successful comeback after his long break due to health problems with his 15th place.
The next FIS Grand Prix competition will take place next weekend (Saturday) in Hinterzarten (GER). The Ladies' Grand Prix will also kick off there.
