Clear win for Maren Lundby
Jan 13, 2019·Ski JumpingNorway's Maren Lundby won the second competition in Sapporo on Sunday. After the third place in Saturday's competition, the Olympic champion came in clearly ahead of the two Germans Katharina Althaus and Juliane Seyfarth on Sunday.
In perfect conditions with blue sky and light headwind, Maren Lundby posted the best jump in both rounds, her second jump was the longest of the day with 133.5 m. These jumps earned her a lead of almost 20 points over second-places Katharina Althaus. "It feels great to stand on top of the podium again, especially my second jump was really good today", Lundby said after the competition. "I'm very happy. Now we are looking forward to the competitions in Zao next weekend, our team is as strong as never before." Lundby's teammates Anna Odine Stroem and Silje Opseth were seventh and 19th today. For Lundby, this was the 14th World Cup win.
It's also still going great for the German ski jumpers this winter. Katharina Althaus could defend her overall World Cup lead with the second place, Juliane Seyfarth was on the podium again in third. "Today my jumps were better than yesterday", explained Althaus. "I'm very happy that I made it to the podium again today, it feels good. I'm also happy for Juliane, it's great to stand on the podium together with a teammate. We are looking forward to the competitions in Zao, especially the team event there."
Seyfarth was also more than satisfied with the weekend in Sapporo. "It's amazing when you are on the podium twice on one weekend, and today together with a teammate. Now we are looking forward to the next competitions", said Seyfarth. Besides Althaus and Seyfarth, also Ramona Straub (6th), Carina Vogt (11th) and Anna Rupprecht showed convincing performances.
The Austrians didn't make it on the podium, but with the places four (Eva Pinkelnig), five (Daniela Iraschko-Stolz) and 14 (Chiara Hoelzl) they achieved a strong team result.
For the Japanese team, the competition didn't go as they had wished. The eighth place of Sara Takanashi and the tenth place for Yuki Ito, are not enough for the Japanese ladies to meet the expectations. Elena Runggaldier of Italy achieved another good result in ninth.
Katharina Althaus leads the overall World Cup with 530 points, followed by Maren Lundby (438 points) and Juliane Seyfarth (356 points).
The Ladies' World Cup continues next weekend in Zao (JPN), where three competitions, including a team event, will be held.
