COC-M: Markus Schiffner claims a clear win
Dec 27, 2018·Ski JumpingThe short Christmas break of the ski jumpers traditionally ends with the Continental Cup in Engelberg (SUI) and Austria's Markus Schiffner presented himself in the best shape in the first competition right after the holidays.
The 26-year-old laid the foundation for his third win in the COC, the first since August 2014, already in the first round with the longest jump of the day of 137.5 m. He easily defended his lead with 129.5 m in the final and won with 317.0 points.
The second and third place on Thursday evening went to Slovenia. Rok Justin finished second with 129.5 m and 130 m and a total of 304.0 points, his teammate Nejc Dezman was third with 132 m and 128 m and 296.6 points. This was the first podium finish of the season for both of them.
Behind the surprisingly strong Japanese Kenshiro Ito in fourth, Anze Lanisek completed the top result of the Slovenian team. Best Swiss was veteran Simon Ammann in sixth. The four-time Olympic champion came in 0.2 points ahead of his fellow countryman Andreas Schuler.
The two Norwegians Marius Lindvik and Joacim Oedegaard Bjoereng finished eighth and ninth, Czech Cestmir Kozisek followed in tenth.
Ulrich Wohlgenannt of Austria and Slovenia's Jaka Hvala were en route to the podium in second and third after the first half of the competition, but both were not able to repeat their very good performance in the second round and came in 15th and 20th overall.
Norway's Robin Pedersen (275 points) remains in the lead of the overall ranking, followed by his teammate Marius Lindvik (232 points) and Poland's Aleksander Zniszczol (199 points).
The second competition in Engelberg starts on Friday at 1 pm CET.
