Werner Schuster ends his job as German head coach

After eleven years on the job, Werner Schuster will retire from his position as head coach of the German ski jumpers at the end of this season. The Austrian announced his decision at a press conference in Oberstdorf today.

"I really enjoyed working with this team over all these years. However, I cannot comply with the request of the association to continue in the job until 2022 due to private reasons. I personally have built and rebuilt the team and so I know the amount of energy that will be necessary for the next three years. Now is a good time to hand over the team", explained the 49-year-old, who might continue working with the German Ski Association (DSV) in another form. "I enjoy working with the DSV and so I can imagine working there in another position."

Horst Huettel, sporting director for Ski Jumping in the DSV, regrets the decision of Werner Schuster to end the successful cooperation. "Over the last eleven years, we could celebrate many big successes together. The foundation for that was the extremely dedicated and professional work of Werner Schuster. That's why I regret his decision, but at the same time, I respect it. We want to continue working with Werner Schuster in the future and we are discussing possible concepts. We will make a concrete announced until the head coaches meeting in April."

Werner Schuster has been working as head coach in Germany since 2009. Among the biggest successes of the German ski jumpers during this period time of time are the Olympic gold medals with the team 2014 in Sochi (RUS) and of Andreas Wellinger 2018 in PyeongChang, as well as World Championship titles with the team and of Severin Freund and the overall World Cup title of Severin Freund in the 2014/15 season.
