Chiara Hoelzl claims the win in Germany

Austrian Chiara Hölzl won the first competition of the FIS Women's World Cup in Oberstdorf (GER) on Saturday and gained important points in the fight for the yellow bib in the overall World Cup. The 22-year-old from SV Schwarzwach-Salzburg won ahead of Maren Lundby from Norway and teammate Daniela Iraschko-Stolz.
Second in the qualification yesterday, Austrian Hoelzl posted the best jumps reaching 130 m and 141.5 m for a total of 284.9 points. With such a last jump, she improved the women's ski jump record, held by Maren Lundby, by six metres.
Current World Cup leader Maren Lundby defended her yellow bib and showed a great shape improving each jumps after her 16th position at the qualification yesterday.
Another great improvement had been shown by Austrian Daniela Iraschko-Stolz, who finished 25th yesterday at the qualification. Thanks to helpful team spirit, she learned from her teammate and put her advices into practice "Chiara told me how to jump far here, I tried that today and it worked much better. It is really fun to be part of a strong team, we have a good spirit and motivate each other.”
Austrian team remained strong with Eva Pinkelnig, (fourth) and Marita Kramer (sixth) completing the top 6 of today.
After winning the qualification yesterday, Slovenian Nika Kriznar could not keep up with the Austrians but finished on a strong fifth place.
Nozomi Maruyama was the best Japanese in seventh position, ahead of teammate Yuki Ito, ninth, whereas Sara Takanashi, best current Japanese overall, finished 16th disappointed after her first jump at only 104 m.
With a strong German public supporting them, Juliane Seyfarth scored 246.8 points and finished eighth and Katharina Althaus reached the 13th position.
Ema Klinec from Slovenia completed the top 10
After this first competition in Germany, Maren Lundby still leads the overall ranking of the World Cup with 735 points, just 5 points ahed of Chiara Hoelz. Eva Pinkelnig follows on third with 699 points.
The World Cup continues tomorrow on Sunday at 15.30 CET.
