Ziga Jelar surprises in the qualification

Slovenia's Ziga Jelar won the qualification for the FIS Grand Prix 2019 in Hinterzarten on Friday evening. For the 21-year-old representing the ski club Triglav Kranj, this was the first ever win in a qualification. The second and third place in Hinterzarten went to Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer and Killian Peier of Switzerland.

Jelar posted the longest jump of the day with 104 m and scored 130.7 points, Schlierenzauer landed at 102.5 m (129.7 points), Peier jumped on 103.5 m (129.1 points).

The best German in front of 4000 fans was Richard Freitag in fourth. Karl Geiger (6th) and Markus Eisenbichler (9th) completed the good result of the local heroes.

Besides the Germans, the athletes of Japan could also show convincing performances with Naoki Nakamura, Yuken Iwasa and Yukiya Sato in fifth, seventh and 12th. Superstar Ryoyu Kobayashi of Japan will not participate in the FIS Grand Prix before the event in Hakuba.

The mixed team competition in Hinterzarten will start at 11:55 am on Saturday, followed by the men's individual event at 6:30 pm CET.
