Robert Johansson takes the win in Lahti
Jan 24, 2021·Ski JumpingNorway's Robert Johansson won the Ski Jumping World Cup in Lahti (FIN) on Sunday. In a dramatic competition, Johansson came in ahead of the two Germans Markus Eisenbichler and Karl Geiger. The tragic figure of today's competition was overall World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud, who fell after the landing of the longest jump of the day.
The competition in Lahti was not for the faint-hearted. At half-time, Halvor Egner Granerud already had a lead of more than 10 points and he seemed like the clear winner. But then came the final jump of the competition, the second one of the Norwegian and this jump was far - very far - too far. Granerud jumped on 137.5 m but he fell after the landing and so he finished only fourth. But at least the World Cup leader didn't sustain any injuries.
Due to the crash of his teammate, Robert Johansson claimed his third World Cup win. "The competition was quite good. I couldn't show my best jumps, but they were at a high level so I'm happy with that and with the entire weekend. Of course, it's a shame to see a teammate fall, it was a really great jump from Halvor. I hope I can continue making progress also next weekend, the last two weekends were good for me and now I want to build up more confidence towards the World Championships", said the winner.
This was Johansson's first win outside of Norway, the 29-year-old with the famous mustache took his first two wins in Vikersund and Oslo.
Second-placed Markus Eisenbichler was really fed up after his jumps today. "My jumps today were really good, but the landing was terrible. I made mistakes at the landing in both rounds and now I'm second. It makes me happy that the jumps are getting better and better but I have to work on the landing. Tomorrow we are going home, I want to relax a bit and then I'll focus on the next competitions in Willingen", said Eisenbichler.
The third place went to Eisenbichler's Karl Geiger. "It was a really nice day. Jumping was a lot of fun and I'm really happy that I'm on the podium together with a teammate. I'm happy about my performances here in Lahti, we had two very good competitions. I like this hill a lot and it was nice here after the last few weeks were really tough for me", Geiger told after the competition.
Stefan Kraft was the best Austrian in fifth, Anze Lanisek confirmed his good shape in seventh, right behind Norway's Daniel Andre Tande. Pius Paschke finished on the good tenth place, Piotr Zyla was the best of the Polish team in eleventh.
Halvor Egner Granerud now leads the overall World Cup with 1006 points, followed by Markus Eisenbichler (796 points) and Kamil Stoch (661 points).
The World Cup continues next weekend in Willingen (GER), where there will also be no spectators at the hill.
