First World Cup win for Jan Hoerl

Jan Hoerl

23-year-old Jan Hoerl claimed his maiden World Cup win on Sunday in Wisla (POL). In an exciting competition in great conditions, the Austrian took his first win ahead of Norway's Marius Lindvik and Austria's Stefan Kraft.

Jan Hoerl showed a convincing performance in the competition after he had a horrible-looking crash after the landing in the trial round.
"Today I experienced it all, it started with my first crash in a long time in the trial round, maybe you just need that from time to time. If somebody would have told me a few weeks ago that I would win with the team and in the individual competition in Wisla I would have laughed at him", explained the overwhelmed winner. Since 2016 (Michael Hayboeck), Stefan Kraft was the only Austrian to win World Cup competitions, now Hoerl ended this unique position of Stefan Kraft within the Austrian team.

Jan Hoerl is now the fifth different winner in the fifth individual competition this season, and these five winners are from five different nations.

The German team didn't make it to the podium today, but they achieved strong results in an extremely close and exciting competition. Karl Geiger, Markus Eisenbichler, and Pius Paschke finished fourth, fifth, and seventh. "I'm satisfied with today's result, there are still some things to improve, but I'm satisfied today", said Markus Eisenbichler.
Cene Prevc was the best Slovene in sixth, his teammate Lovro Kos was eighth, which is a career-best for him in the World Cup.

Halvor Egner Granerud provided the drama of the day. After the Norwegian had a great jump and was the best in the trial round, he could not repeat this in the first round of the competition. Granerud could barely avoid a crash and landed already at 103.5 m. He was only 48th and could not qualify for the final round. It's a thin line between good and bad for the Norwegian right now, last winter's overall World Cup champion still lacks consistency. He had already failed to qualify for both competitions in Ruka last weekend, but he could be back soon, that's for sure. The Norwegian will get his next chance in Klingenthal.

Granerud was not the only well-known athlete who failed to make the cut today: Stephan Leyhe (GER), Dawid Kubacki (POL), Andreas Wellinger (GER), and Daniel Andre Tande (NOR) could also not qualify for the second round.

Karl Geiger remains in the lead of the overall World Cup with 355 points. He is followed by Anze Lanisek (272 points) and Markus Eisenbichler (237 points).
The Ski Jumping World Cup continues next weekend with two competitions in Klingenthal (GER).
