The 100th New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was a real highlight, that couldn't be any more exciting. In the end, Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi won with a lead of only 0.2 points over Markus Eisenbichler. Slovenia's Lovro Kos finished third.

"I really enjoyed it today. Markus did a very good job, I heard the spectators cheering after his jump so I knew that he went far", Kobayashi said. With his final jump of 143.5 m, Eisenbichler put a lot of pressure on Kobayashi, who was in the lead after the first round. But Kobayashi once again had the right answer and took the win. "In contrast to 2019, when I could win the 4-Hills-Tournament and the World Cup, I can now evaluate myself and my performance better. I gained a lot of experience in the past two years. The 4-Hills-Tournament is far from over, I have a lead of 13 points now, but there are still two competitions left and a lot can happen."

Markus Eisenbichler stated: "Before the jump, I was a bit nervous, I enjoyed my jumps today and I'm really happy about my performance. I'm absolutely satisfied, Ryoyu is jumping very, very well and showed good performances and when he's better in the end, then he is simply better. I will continue working and then we'll see the outcome", said the Bavarian, who is now fourth in the overall ranking of the 4-Hills-Tournament, 21.1 points behind Kobayashi. The Japanese now leads with 593.2 points, Norway's Marius Lindvik is second (580 points), and Slovenia's Lovro Kos, who finished on a strong third place today, follows in third (575.5 points).

Markus Lindvik, who won in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 2020, came in fourth today, Jan Hoerl was the best Austrian in fifth and Yukiya Sato convinced with the sixth place.

It was not a good day for Karl Geier. The Oberstdorf-native was seventh and not only lost his second place in the 4-Hills-Tournament (he is now 6th) but also the yellow bib. Ryoyu Kobayashi took the lead in the overall World Cup, he is now 21 points ahead of Geiger. Halvor Egner Granerud is third with 473 points.

The Polish team experienced the second defeat in a row. Piotr Zyla (11th) and Jakub Wolny (23rd) were the only two Polish jumpers in the final round. "It was a lot better than in Oberstdorf, but my jumps are still now where I want them to be. Now I'm looking forward to Innsbruck and there I want to keep improving and show good jumps", said Zyla, who is suffering from a cold for a couple of days now.

The 4-Hills-Tournament continues on Monday with the training and the qualification (1:30 pm CET) in Innsbruck.
