Marius Lindvik wins first qualification in Beijing

Norway's Marius Lindvik won Saturday's qualification for the first men's Ski Jumping competition on the normal hill at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Lindvik jumped on 100.5 m (116.7 points), only 0.1 points behind the winner, Lindvik's teammate Robert Johansson followed in second (103 m; 116.6 points). The third place went to Poland's Piotr Zyla (102.5 m; 112.1 points).

In difficult wind conditions, today's qualification was the first crucial event for the athletes on the HS 106 normal hill in the gigantic facility in the Zhangjiakou National Ski Jumping center.

Behind Lindvik, Johansson, and Zyla, Japan's Ryoyu Kobayashi was fourth in the qualification, followed by Stefan Kraft of Austria, the sixth place went to Manuel Fettner, who already jumped very well in training.

Gregor Deschwanden of Switzerland also showed a strong performance in seventh, just like Finland's Antti Aalto in eighth. Karl Geiger was the best Germany in ninth, Yukiya Sato completed the Top 10.

The first men's competition in Beijing, the event on the normal hill, will start on Sunday at 12 pm CET. The women's competition on the normal hill is held today, starting at 11:45 am CET.
