Ursa Bogataj wins season opener
Jul 17, 2021·Ski JumpingSlovenia's Ursa Bogataj won the first Grand Prix of the summer in Wisla. In an exciting competition, the 26-year-old came in ahead of the two Japanese Sara Takanashi and Nozomi Maruyama.
Two jumps of 126.5 m earned Bogataj her first win on the World Cup level. With 227.9 points she scored 2.3 points more than second-placed Sara Takanashi of Japan. "I'm extremely happy about my first win, right now I will enjoy this and then we'll see what's possible in the second competition tomorrow", said today's winner.
Nozomi Maruyama cried tears of joy after finishing third, it is the first podium result of the 23-year-old. With Yuki Ito in sixth, a third Japanese jumper came in among the Top 6 this afternoon.
Eva Pinkelnig was the best Austrian in fourth, she missed the podium by only 1.6 points. The best German was once again Katharina Althaus, the 25-year-old from Oberstdorf was 11th, Juliane Seyfarth finished 20th. Pauline Hessler and Selina Freitag tied for 22nd, Anna Rupprecht and Luisa Goerlich came in 28th and 29th in the first competition of the new German head coach Maximilian Mechler.
Ursa Bogataj now leads the Grand Prix ranking ahead of the two Japanese who stood on the podium with her today. The second women's competition of the summer will start tomorrow at 1 pm CET.
The opener in Wisla was the first of a total of six women's competitions in the Grand Prix 2021.
