Fairplay wins on the first day in Ruka

Rukatunturi hill in Ruka

It was a very special day for the ski jumpers at the start of the World Cup weekend in Ruka (FIN).
A lack of competition equipment meant that on Friday evening there were only three training jumps on the Rukatunturi hill instead of the planned qualification. Team Germany lacked the skis, the other teams said: then we'll wait.
On Wednesday, the German team had left Munich for Kuusamo. Athletes and coaches arrived at the Arctic Circle on schedule, but the skis were missing. Initially it was expected that the skis would arrive on Friday and thus in time for training, but during the day it became clear that there would not be enough time.
So at the TCM, the Team Captains Meeting, the request was made to postpone the qualification to Saturday morning at 8:30 local time, because without qualification there would be no participation in the competition.
All teams agreed to the request, the German skis have arrived in Kuusamo in the meantime and on Saturday all 6 German athletes will take part in the qualification. "It was not an easy decision in principle, but in the end everyone is happy that the idea of fair play prevailed today" explained FIS Race Director Sandro Pertile.
A nice gesture in times of enormous pressure in high-performance sport.

In the training session in the evening, which took place in crisp minus temperatures, Stefan Kraft (AUT), Marius Lindvik (NOR), Michael Hayboeck (AUT) and the Slovenian Anze Lanisek showed strong jumps. Qualification and competition on Saturday and Sunday promise to be very exciting.
