Sierra Nevada (ESP) ready for back-to-back races

The Snowboard Cross World Cup circuit is back in beautiful Sierra Nevada, Spain for the fifth time. From 10 – 12 March we can see the worlds best snowboard cross athletes sending it down the one-kilometer-long and challenging course.

Sierra Nevada, which means snow-capped mountain in Spanish is located in south of Spain in the province Granada. With a height of 3482m the mountain which is usually covered with snow from November until May is the highest mountain of the Iberian Peninsula. Within 45 minutes you can also reach the world heritage castle Alhambra.

As only one week passed by since we crowned our new world champions, let’s get all the emotions back in our minds by having another look at what happened at the most important race of the season.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side, so the athletes were fighting for the medals already on 01 March instead of 03 March 2023.

On women’s side Czech Eva Adamczykova can now call world champion in snowboard cross. The 29-year-old was unbeaten all day long and also won the final run by leading from top to bottom and demonstrating her amazing boarding skills and experience.

Next to her, we saw young Australian Josie Baff on the podium. The new vice world champion won her career first race at the first world cup race of the season in Les Deux Alpes (FRA) and is racing the season of her life so far.

Fife time world champion Lindsey Jacobellis was not on our list for winning a medal in Bakuriani as she didn’t stand on the podium this season to this point, but she once again showed her experienced riding and won the bronze medal.

On the men’s side of things, the new world champion is called Jakob Dusek (AUT). The Austrian who was a bit lucky that his competitors Noerl and Haemmerle who were in first and second position had a small collision right before the finish strait won the photo finish against Noerl in the end. It was his first win this season and his second career win counting world cups and world championships together.

Martin Noerl (GER) who thought he won this race when he crossed the finish line got second, the Italian Omar Visitin who also had a benefit from the crash of Haemmerle got third. Both never stood on the podium at a single event at world championships before.

The most surprising results were that reigning world champions Bankes (GBR) and Eguibar (ESP) already failed in the pre-heats and got 17th and 33rd.

First Pre-Heats which count for the race on Saturday are scheduled for Friday, 10 March at 10:45 CET. The second Pre-Heats will get underway right before the race on Sunday, 12 March at 10:00 CET. Pre-Heats can be followed on our website or via our FIS App.
