Monday Mix - July 20, 2020
Jul 20, 2020·Snowboard Park & PipeMonday rolls around once again and we're back with another edition of the Mix, where we've got a whooole stack of fresh summertime edits from places like Mt. Hood and Molltaler, some sunshine fun from Spain to Korea, the competition retirement of a legend, and much more.
But first up we've got to recognize that today's date, July 20, can also be written as 7/20, and in honour of 7/20 day we present this Gimbal God/Staale Sandbech shot that is pure poetry...
Ah what the heck, you can never really have too much of a good thing, and shred-relavent days on the calendar don't come along very often, so here's another one from Uganda's finest Brolin Mawejje...
Ok ok ok here's FOUR 720s from Grant Giller. But that's it. No more 720s. Unless there happen to be some more of them in the next clips, in which case yes there will be more 720s (spoiler alert: there will be)...
The US team has been on the scene in Mt. Hood for the past couple weeks and absolutely crushing it, so buckle up because we're going to be gunning through a bunch of the best that we've come across in the past seven days now, beginning with - you guessed it! - a couple of nice 720s (plus a bunch of other tricks) from Lyon Farrell...
Next up we've got Judd Henkes. We stopped counting spins somewhere in the middle of this one, although we definitely saw a couple of real nice 12's in there though. Judd is ripping...
And here's Luke Winkelmann getting in on the action with this edit. If there's one thing to take awy from all of these clips, it's the US young guns sure laid a beating on that down-flat-down rail...
Over in the pipe we saw Ryan Wachendorfer putting down this effortless four-hitter with his teammate Chase Blackwell behind the camera...
And now a little bit of slushy fun courtesy of JJ Thomas, Shaun White, and Toby Miller. Cartwheels and slashes and hoola-hooping, oh my!
To wrap it up from Hood we've got what has to be our favorite clip of the week, as supergrom Patti Zhou brings the stoke with a crippler 720. Did we mention she's just eight years old?!
Hood's not the only spot firing in the US, as Woodward Copper's Central Park is open now and for the next few week's. Torstein Horgmo is on site there in Colorado, and we could watch him effortlessly breezing around Woodward alllll day. It doesn't get much more stylish than this...
And we loved to see this one from the legend Chad Otterstrom. 44-years-old and still ripping...
Some big news out of Mammoth, where Chloe Kim is back on snow. Ok, sure, she didn't actually bring her snowboard with her, but she is literally back on snow for the first time that we've seen since she announced her hiatus from competition last year to focus on university...
And over in Europe it's still going down at Clemens Millauer's park in Molltaler, where Nicolas Huber has been putting in some heavy reps on the canon rail...
And of course we couldn't move on without a little action from Mr. Millauer himself...
This one's bit of a throwback to the spring, but we're happy to revist Lia-Mara Boesch's both-ways 360-off clips from Crans Montana...
Meanwhile, it looks like the snow's finally coming down in Australia, and Oz's wildest son Matty Cox has been in Perisher getting after it in a big way, including this...well, what is this exactly? A...uh...barrell roll revert? Does anyone call anything a "barrell roll" anymore? All we know is it's classic Cox and we can't get enough of it...
Matty's compatriot Tess Coady has also been busy, getting back on board and up off the ground for the first time in this southern winter season with a tres stylish backside 180 melon...
Ok, there's more shredding to come later, but it's time to get to some news, beginning with a pretty huge announcement out of New Zealand, where Christy Prior has announced her retirement from the the NZL national team. While it's been a couple of years since we last saw Christy at a World Cup event, she leaves the World Cup scene with a victory as the last result on her bio, as she was the winner at the Snowmass slopestyle back in 2017/18. Congrats to Christy on her competitive career and we wish her all the best in the future!
More congrats are in order now, this time for Austria's Alessandro Haemmerle, who was named the Sportsman of the Year for his home region of Vorarlberg...
And even MORE congrats are in order, this time for Vancouver 2010 Olympic gold medallist and Sochi 2014 silver medallist Torah Bright, who just welcomed her first child into the world...
Annnnd another round of congratulations for another Olympic gold medallist, this time for PyeongChang 2018 SBX champ (and reigning crystal glober winner) Michela Moioli, who celebrated her 25th birthday on Friday with a lovely looking bike ride amongst the mountains...
A couple of giants of Canadian snowsport sat down for an "Athlete to Athlete" interview, with PyeongChang slopestyle silver medallist Max Parrot engaging with fellow Quebecor Mikael Kingsbury - widely considered to be the greatest moguls skier of all time. Check out the converstaion here...
SBX Life had their first interview since the death of Alex "Chumpy" Pullin, as they sat down with 2019/20 third-overall rider Omar Visintin of Italy...
Let's check in on a little dryland training action, first over in Korea, where PyeongChang 2018 PGS silver medallist Sang Ho Lee is looking fit and fast and footloose...
Katie Ormerod is flipping out in Manchester...
Love to see a little skate action from Mikey Ciccarelli at home in Hamilton...
Not an actual training check-in, but judging by the shape he's in Lucas Equibar hasn't been skipping too many days in the gym...
And now let's get back to some riding as we close out this week's Mix out with a handful of worthy throwbacks, beginning with Maurizio Bormolini and high-speed training rip through the gates...
And then down to New Zealand with Canada Snowboard and a little feel-good messing around with Sebastien Toutant...
Then over to Brandon Davis with this monster backcountry double McTwist...
And finally this unreal clip from a few weeks back, featuring the inimitable Marcus Kleveland going buck wild on the sidehits in Stryn. Make sure you stick around to the end for a little hammer-time...
Phew, ok...plenty to chew on for you all there today! Hope you enjoyed it and see back here next week and the world-famous Monday Mix.
