Monday Mix - July 27, 2020
Jul 27, 2020·Snowboard Park & PipeIt's the last Monday of July and also the last Monday Mix for the foreseeable future, as we enter the dog days of summer, snowboarding in the northern hemisphere really and truly winds down, and we here at FIS begin focusing more heavily on the road ahead to the 2020/21 season. There's a pretty good chance we'll bring the Mix back as a monthly feature later on in August, but until then this is it - so sit back, kick your feet up, and enjoy the best of the world shred from the past seven days.
Speaking of "the best," there's not really any argument about who the top dog is when it comes to knuckle-hucking, as Marcus Kleveland sets the standard by which all others are measured.
However, young Dusty Henricksen's breakout 2019/20 season earned him a spot in the conversation about who might be the best slopestyle rider in the world, and now by showing off knuckle skills like this we can imagine him pushing Kleveland for the crown sometime in the not too distant future...
Not to be outdone, Dusty's buddy Judd Henkes threw an extra wrinkle into his knuckle artistry, throwing an up-rail into the mix before getting his flex on with this mindbender at Mt Hood...
Which brings us to Zeb Powell, who busted the Big Pink back out again and got to WORK on the very same feature...
We started out the Mix with straight fire and we'll transition into shots fired, as Sarka Pankochova and Klaudia Medlova get blasted out of the canon with this double-line of back-to-back backies action in Molltaler...
Speaking of Klaudia Medlova, if you watch to the end of this summer-y clip from her time in Austria you might notice something more than a little bit gnarly, as it appears the 26-year-old Slovakian has been working on a triple backside rodeo on the airbag at BangerPark...😯
Oooh baby...
Keeping it rolling with some of the world's most stylish women, here's Maddie Mastro checking from Mt Hood with a big ol' stalefish-grabbin' frontside spinner...
And how about we hop down south of the equator, where Australia's finest Tess Coady has been putting a hurting in on the rails at Perisher. This is indeed the dictionary definition of "smooth"...
Also in Perisher and also crushing the scene is mad man Matty Cox, who was getting mean all over the Perisher Park last week...
And while we're on the topic of mad Australians we may as well take it off the snow and into the mind of Scotty James, who recruited his parents and girlfriend for this hilarious and ridiculous dance* video.
*Is this dancing? We all know Scotty [has smoother moves](http://<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/BkTU8tGBt7O/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="12" style=" background:#FFF; We're not sure how many times we've mentioned how bummed we are to not be able to open the 2020/21 World Cup season in Cardrona as was originally planned, due to the pandemic, but seeing the big line rounding into form at the Cardrona Park has us feeling really and truly longing for better days. Obviously, we're stoked for everyone who's down there and gettin' some, but man...wish we could be there...
Oh, and it looks like they've been getting pow-pow, too, as illustrated here by the recently-retired-from-competition Christy Prior...
Speaking of southern powder, Argentina's Cerro Cetedral opened for business last week, and with some bigtime dumps hitting the resort on the regular we can expect to see plenty more of this from the likes of Mati Schmitt in the coming weeks and months...
And more like this, courtesy of Mati Radaelli...
Back up north now and over to Europe, where transition master Queralt Castellet blessed the timeline with a classic Andrecht in Zermatt...
Now back to Mollatler, where Illias Van Hoof and Niek van der Velden have been enjoying the late-season rail lines in Austria...
Of course, for most riders the season is well and truly finished and summer mode is in full effect. However, that doesn't mean that the stuntin' is done, as illustrated by Derek Livingston with this beauty of a rope swing double in Whistler...
Also up in Canada and also getting gnar on a swing is Jamie Anderson, as she tossed this massive backie with her signature style over the weekend...
Speaking of style, we'll sign on to watch the inimitable Red Gerard do just about anything - especially if it's on a board of some kind. Here he is with a ripper of a line, hiding out from the sun and skating at this indoor park in Cali...
Jonas Boesiger has gone another route entirely in his search for off-snow kicks, strapping into a parasail instead of snowboard and sending it off of the mountain instead of down the mountain for this perspective high above Switzerland...
Some like to keep it a little bit closer to ground level when they're not on a snowboard, though, and last week we saw mountain bike posts from a tonne of riders, including freestylers like Max Parrott, SBX rippers like Michela Moioli (with alpine ski star Sofia Goggia), and alpine SB specialists like Alexander Payer...
And then there's Staale Sandbech, who did some work on behalf of the environment by diving for trash with his buddies Torgeir Bergrem and Remy Myers on the Norwegian coast, before turning that trash into art with a piece of sculpture that is, quite frankly, pretty impressive.
Is that Sotheby's Auction House that we hear calling?
As we well know, though, no snow doesn't necessarily mean no shred, as this superstylish dryslope action from Haruna Ishihara illustrates...
Meanwhile, Jamie Nicholls dropped his final edit from the backyard before dismantling the ramp for the season and turning his attention to the local indoor on-snow facilities as things open back up in the UK...
And, now, sadly, we come to the end of the final weekly Monday Mix of the summer, where we'll send things out with two clips that kind of sum up why we love snowboarding so much.
Firstly, we look to Lyon Farrell and Yuki Kadono. Two rippers from opposite sides of the world, flowing around Mt Hood and using the park in an original way, copying each other but bringing their own individal styles to the table, and sharing laughs and a whole lot of stoke. This is what it's all about...
And, finally, to Brock Crouch. This one speaks for itself.
Big thanks to everyone for following along with the Monday Mix for the past few months. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we throw it back to some standout moments from last season that deserve revisiting, and as we gear up for a 2020/21 season that, despite the many COVID-19-related question marks, we remain keenly looking forward to.
