SCHILPARIO (ITA) - Day 3 in Italy featured the highly anticipated 20km mass start. The men's race was an intense battle, with the Norwegian skiers setting the pace at the front throughout. However, the Italian athletes also made their presence known, showcasing their strength as they attempted to control the race. In the end, no one could match Lars Heggen. Sticking to his plan, he made his decisive move on the third lap, creating the gap he needed to finally claim the gold he had been striving for. Gabriele Matli brought home Italy’s first medal of the championships with silver, while 17-year-old Norwegian Leopold Strand secured the bronze.

It feels amazing, this has been my goal for so long so I am extremely happy. My plan was to go hard after three laps, and try to get a gap in the long hill. I just tried to follow my plan and my body felt good, so I am just extremely happy with the gold.Lars Heggen

After securing bronze in Monday’s sprint, Milla Grosberghaugen Andreassen had her sights set even higher in the 20km mass start. From the very beginning, she positioned herself at the front, leading a group of 5–7 athletes. But in the end, no one could match Andreassen’s strength. She broke away from her teammate Hanna Sörbye, creating the gap she needed to claim her third gold medal of the championships. Sorbye secured the silver, while Alison Mackie took bronze—Canada’s first medal at the Junior World Championships since Marie-Josée Pépin in 1989.

I have no words, I am so happy, I had amazing skiis today. I am just so happy how this race turned out.Milla Grosberghaugen Andreassen
