After eight long months of anticipation the wait is finally over and the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup is about to get the ball rolling on the 2020/21 season this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Ruka (FIN).

This year marks the 12th consecutive time the FIS Freestyle season has began in the far north of Finland, and based on the consistent success of previous editions of the Freestyle Opening Ruka World Cup it’s fair to once again expect nothing less than excellent competitions under the lights to kick of the 2021/22 campaign.

In addition to the annual moguls season opener, last year’s edition of the Freestyle Opening Ruka also saw the flying field competing in World Cup action at the Finnish resort, and once again this season the world’s highest flying athletes are back on the scene in Ruka for what will be a total of five competitions over the next 10 days.

The organisers in Ruka have stepped their game up a notch for the aerials skiers this season, hosting an individual and mixed team event this week, before we see another set of back-to-back competitions here on December 10-11.

While most of athletes know the venue in Ruka very well, as it’s one of the most popular training grounds during the pre-season period, this season will be the first time in history that the Finnish resort will actually host five FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup competitions in one season.

That being said, the organisers in Ruka have delivered a five-star course year after year, and again this season the “Battery Run” moguls course, as well as the aerials venue, are primed and ready to welcome the world’s best skiers as they look to start an Olympic season on a high note.

With Beijing 2022 looming on the horizon, the field of athletes here in Ruka is probably the strongest and most competitive we’ve ever seen before, so fasten your seatbelts tight and let’s go!

And for those of you who want to know what’s in store and who to watch out for this upcoming campaign, we’ve covered that very recently in our 2021/22 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup season and you can read all about the contenders as well as the calendar HERE.
