After a day full of learning and inspiration, the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, in collaboration with Coastal GasLink/TC Energy, is delighted to share the achievements of a recent educational outing. This event welcomed 200 students from grades 3-7 within School District 57, enriching them with activities linked to the upcoming 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships and Para Nordic World Cup Finals. Held at the UNBC Canfor Theatre, the day was designed to foster youth engagement with these international sports events. Additionally, Mark Elson’s class from Quinson Elementary was treated to a special hot dog roast and a hands-on ‘try-it’ session with Josh at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, further connecting students to the world of Para sports.

Dubbed “Inspiring Hope,” the field trip featured a compelling presentation by two-time Paralympian, Josh Dueck, who shared his remarkable story of overcoming adversity through sport and community support. Dueck’s message of resilience and hope resonated deeply with students, offering them a firsthand look at the transformative power of determination and positive mindset. In addition to Dueck’s presentation, the Saint John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program participated, illustrating the significant emotional and physical support therapy dogs provide to individuals facing challenges.

Heidi Martel, Event Manager, expressed her enthusiasm about the event’s impact, “Josh Dueck’s visit was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. His ability to connect with the students and inspire them with his journey of perseverance and success in Para sports was truly moving.”

Kevin Pettersen, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, remarked on the field trip’s success, “The ‘Inspiring Hope’ field trip was a perfect prelude to the excitement of the upcoming world competitions. It not only provided our youth with a unique educational experience but also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and the spirit of the Para athletic community.”

The educational field trips underscore the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club’s commitment to leveraging the 2024 Para World Competitions as a platform for community engagement, education, and the promotion of Para sports.
