Megève (FRA) all set for Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup
Jan 31, 2020·Ski CrossFrom the north of Europe in Scandinavia, we are back in more central Europe, in the French Alps. Megève is the next stop for the upcoming weekend in the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup calendar.
Megève – after having been a regular stop on the World Cup tour for many previous seasons - was the stage of the 2017/18 Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup finals, which unfortunately were cancelled due to heavy snowfall and really rough weather conditions which did not allow for a final race of the season.
So it is to everyone’s excitement that the circuit will return to this very chic resort for some world class ski cross action on February 1.
At the back-to-back races in Sweden’s Idre Fjäll last weekend with a course consisting of 56 incredible features, we saw Fanny Smith (SUI) winning at her 100th World Cup start on competition day number one, edging home hero Sandra Naeslund (SWE) to number two and Brittany Phelan taking podium spot number three.
Naeslund took her revenge when winning on the second race day in front of her home crowd, leaving Smith on number two and Marielle Thompson (CAN) getting in third.
The men’s competition saw also a Swiss winner on Saturday – Ryan Regez took an incredible finish at the last roller section, coming from third position into third ahead of Canada’s Olympic Champion Brady Leman and current World Champion Francois Place (FRA).
The second competition day was nothing short of excitement, when we saw the incredible return of Germany’s Daniel Bohnacker to the top of the podium after his last win in 2011, current World Cup leader Kevin Drury came in second and Ryan Regez (SUI) made it to third.
Back in the French Alps, one can only expect a good battle for more World Cup points, especially on the women’s side of things. Sandra Naeslund with 730 points is still 79 points ahead of Fanny Smith (651 points). Sitting in third with 559 points is Canada’s Marielle Thompson.
Will we see these three on the podium again this weekend?
When looking on the World Cup standings on the men’s side, Kevin Drury (CAN) is sitting comfortably in the lead with a 149-point margin to the second, who is now the Swiss athlete Ryan Regez (439 points) after the very successful Idre races and Brady Leman, who came in third with 352 points, overtaking team mate Kris Mahler.
Megève title defenders from March 2015: Anna Holmlund (SWE – no longer active) and Jean-Frédéric Chapuis (FRA), who is currently recovering after an appendix surgery.
Qualifications are scheduled for January 31 and finals are ready to happen on February 1 at 10:45 CET. Please note that the finals have been moved to an earlier time due to the weather forecast.
