Détraz (SUI) and Bohnacker (GER) suffer training injuries
Sep 08, 2020·Ski CrossUnfortunately, the risk of injuries is always part of the game as a professional athlete. It is a moment of too little attention, an unforeseen bump in the slope or track, a little loss of control or simply bad luck.
Two of ski cross’s male world cup athletes were hit by this bad luck recently during their first training sessions back on snow.
Romain Détraz from the Swiss squad had just come back from a longer recovery from a previous injury, when he crashed during training in Saas-Fee (SUI) in August and injured his left knee.
In the hospital, Détraz was diagnosed with a torn ACL, which means a recovery time of six to nine months, which also means that the Swiss athlete will be missing the upcoming Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup season.
Another male athlete of the ski cross World Cup circuit was pretty unlucky during training at the Stelvio Pass (ITA). Daniel Bohnacker (GER) crashed during training and injured his right hand so badly that he had to undergo surgery. Bohnacker will have to wear a splint on his “skier’s thumb” for the next two weeks, after that he will re-start training preparations with an orthosis and “Bohne” will be returning to snow training by the end of September.
“An injury always comes at a bad time. However, until the start of the season, there is still enough time to properly recover from this. After my crash, I didn’t think the injury was that serious. I wanted to doublecheck with the doctors just to be sure. In the end it was clear to them that surgery was inevitable,” Bohnacker said after his surgery at the MVZ Oberstdorf.
FIS wishes both athletes all the best and a quick and successful recovery!
