Ryoyu Kobayashi won the World Cup Overall 2021/2022 and is a top contender also in the
upcoming winter. However, before Japan's star glowed and dominated winter 2018/19, he
made promising results. Who may follow in his footsteps following years? These are the
athletes who can astonish this winter and can have a bright future.
Daniel Tschofenig (Austria)
He might not be a newcomer, but Tschofening will likely show his potential this season.
The Junior World Champion from Zakopane 2022 made three Top 10 finishes in Grand
Prix competitions. His lowest rank was eleventh in Klingenthal. Tschofenig was very
consistent already the previous season. he reached points in 17 out of 23 events in which
he took part. Once in Zakopane, he missed a podium by a close margin. But it will not be a
surprise if he gets there the upcoming winter. The one to watch without any doubt.
Ren Nikaido (Japan)
The 21-year-old made a brilliant debut in Grand Prix with a win in Rasnov. He confirmed
the good shape in Hinzenbach and Klingenthal. Nikaido participated in only three
competitions and could finish fifth in the Overall. Recently, he surprised again and became
the Japanese Champion ahead of Ryoyu Kobayashi in October. And that shows he can be
among the best in the upcoming winter.
Pawel Wasek (Poland)
The 23-year-old Polish athlete delivered an astonishing result in the Grand Prix under a
new coach Thomas Thurnbichler. He finished in fourth place only behind his teammates
Dawid Kubicki, Kamil Stoch and Austria's Manuel Fettner. Wasek also achieved his first
podium with his second place in Rasnov. He dropped out of the Top 10 only once. There
was consistency and a strong showing. Will the new Polish star be born this season?
Philipp Raimund (Germany)
The 22-year-old made it to Stefan Horngacher's squad for the World Cup opener in Wisla.
Raimund performed well already last winter in Titisee-Neustadt as he scored points in both
competitions. He was also a member of two German teams that captured gold at the
Junior World Championships in 2018 and 2019. The fifth place reached at the recently
held nationals proved he is able to maintain his spot on the team for much longer than a
single weekend in Wisla.
Giovanni Bresadola (Italy)
The younger brother of Davide Bresadola. The 21-year-old athlete stunned the ski jumping
world a couple of weeks ago in Klingenthal taking second place in the qualification round.
He scored points in two out of the three Grand Prix competitions in which he participated.
Bresadola finished as eighth and twelfth in Courchevel and Rasnov. He also captured the
title at the Italian Championships last week. The youngster may bring back good days for
Italian ski jumping.
