Double World Cup in Rogla last tour stop prior to Olympics

Riders on the FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour will turn in at the final stretch of their road to PyeongChang with the double World Cup event in Rogla, Slovenia marking the final chance to earn international quota spots for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea.

Back-to-back parallel giant slalom races are slated for 20th and 21st January 2018 on Jasa slope where World Cup events have been hosted annually ever since the ski resort's debut as a World Cup host back in 2013.

After missing out the Bad Gastein parallel action last week due to her start on the Alpine Skiing World Cup circuit, Overall Word Cup leader Ester Ledecka (CZE) is supposed to strap in again with the 22-year-old being the most successful competitor on the 450 metres long race course in Slovenia.

In so far five events Ledecka came out victorious three times. With wins in 2014, 2016 and 2017 she is also able to secure a three-peat – a feat not that unrealistic as the Prague resident has triumphed in all three parallel giant slaloms held this season so far.

Her strongest pursuers are coming from Germany with Selina Joerg (1,510), Ramona Hofmeister (1,400) and Carolin Langenhorst (1,250). But all are already having a big gap to cover in the race for the crystal globe.

While Ledecka sits on top of the ranking with the perfect score of 3,000 points, things are more thrilling in the men's standings with Nevin Galmarini (SUI; 2,300) leading a battle of three riders who have all triumphed in one PGS this season so far.

Alexander Payer (AUT; 1,650) and 2015 World Champion Andrey Sobolev (RUS; 1,600) are both had to head in their hunt for Galmarini.

The Rogla events get even more interesting as Sobolev and Galmarini are the winners of 2016 and 2017, respectively.

However, one local favourite has the best Rogla streak under his belt so far.

Zan Kosir, finally fully recovered from his back problems which sidelined him from action for the whole 2016 World Cup season, has placed on the podium in all of his four starts on home soil.

After winning in 2013 and 2014, the 33-year-old from Trzic placed third in 2015 and 2017.

Qualifiers for both races will start at 10:00 CET with the direct knock out finals being scheduled for 14:30 CET on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
