After an exciting season-opener of the 2020/21 FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup last weekend in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the tour has jumped over the pass for the second PGS competition of the season, which is set to go down on Thursday in Carezza (ITA).

Entering it’s tenth season as a World Cup venue, Carezza continues to deliver the goods year in, and year out, with its perfectly-pitched course and location in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dolomite mountains producing an ideal racing venue.

Furthermore event organisers are keen to highlight their venue's eco-conscious efficiency including a state-of-the-art snowmaking system, which is the most modern and environmental friendly in the entire region of South Tyrol. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of many sustainable practices that the local organising committee have introduced to host the “green” World Cup event in Carezza.

The local organisers didn’t have much luck last year, as the event had to be cancelled mid-competition due to warm temperatures and the deterioration of the course. Things look definitely more promising this year, and with sunny weather in the forecast, the world’s best racers on hand in Italy, and a perfectly prepared slope, everything seems to be in place for the 10th anniversary edition of the FIS Snowboard World Cup competition in Carezza to be one to remember.

In the women’s event watch out for the German trio of Ramona Theresia Hofmeister, Selina Joerg and Cheyenne Loch, who finished the opening race in Cortina d’Ampezzo in second, third and fourth place, respectively, all just back of the Czech phenom Ester Ledecka.

Now, with Ledecka in Val d’Isere this week competing at the FIS Alpine World Cup in downhill, the German team enters Carezza with high hopes for a potential podium sweep on Thursday. And if any of the aforementioned riders fail to deliver in Carezza, there’s always Caroline Langenhorst, who finished sixth in Cortina and will be certainly looking to step her game up this week.

Besides the German team, also to watch out for are Swiss stars Julie Zogg, Ladina Jenny and Patricia Kummer, the usual contenders for a spot on the podium in most events. Then going further down the starting list, let’s also not forget about the local fan’s favourite Nadya Ochner, who won the competition here in 2018, as well as the Austrian veteran Claudia Riegler, Russia’s up-and-comer Sofia Nadyrshina and Japan’s Tsubaki Miki and Tomoka Takeuchi, who both made it into top-10 in Cortina.

Switching over to the men’s side of the event, it all looks like the host Italian squad will be looking to dominate another competition. Last week in Cortina d’Ampezzo the Italians, led by reigning World Cup parallel overall winner Roland Fischnaller, took five out of the top-6 spots, with Austria’s Benjamin Karl heroically spoiling the Italian podium sweep party with his third-place finish.

Nevertheless, Fischnaller, March, Felicetti, Coratti and Bagozza all looked to be in perfect shape and they’re ready to bring on the heat once more in the second race on their home turf.

Other names to keep an eye for in the men’s competition are Andreas Prommeger (AUT), Sangkyum Kim (KOR), Vic Wild (RUS), Dmitry Loginov (RUS), as well as Tim Mastnak (SLO), the last winner here on the slope in Carezza back in 2018.

The PGS competition in Carezza gets underway on Thursday, December 17, starting with qualification rounds at 9:00 CET and the finals following up in the afternoon at 13:00.
