It was a perfect bluebird day in Bansko today as the first competition day at the FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships went in the book in extraordinary fashion with Miki Tsubaki (JPN) and Tervel Zamfirov (BUL) wrapping up the day with golden medals in parallel giant slalom.

After hosting the FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup event for the first time since 2018 earlier in the season, Bansko is currently hosting another big event with the future generations of snowboard alpine racers competing at the 2023 FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships.

With a top-notch course, perfect weather and snow conditions and over 80 participants on hand in Bulgaria’s premier ski resort in Bansko, the first day of competition was without a doubt a highly successful one.

Straight off winning the PGS competition at the Bakuriani 2023 World Championships just a couple of weeks ago, Miki Tsubaki was on a mission once again, unquestionably dominating the parallel giant slalom event from qualifications to the big final to snag her career’s third Junior World Championships gold medal and her seventh in total, including four silver medals from Krasnoyarsk, Lachtal and Rogla.

In the big final Tsubaki edged out Iris Pflum (USA), who finished the competition in respective second place, while Salome Jansing (GER) rounded out the women’s podium with a bronze medal after winning the small final matchup against Fluorine Neva Beatschi (SUI).

Moving to the men’s side of the competition it was Tervel Zamfirov (BUL), who stepped things up from his bronze medal performance last year in Chiesa in Valmalenco, leading the 1-2 punch for the Bulgarian team and winning the gold after winning the big final against his fellow teammate Alexander Krashniak.

Third place and bronze medal went to Max Kuehnhauser (GER), who upset the Bulgarian sweep of the podium by winning his small final matchup against. Petar Gergyovski.

The FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships action continues on Saturday with the parallel slalom competition. The team event is scheduled to go down on Sunday.
