It was an unreal final day of the PGS campaign in the 2024-25 VISA FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup. On the women’s side it was setup to be a huge duel as Tsubaki Miki (JPN) was nine points behind Ramona Theresia Hofmeister (GER) for the PGS crystal globe. While Maurizio Bormolini (ITA) attempted to end his PGS title-winning season with another victory.

In the end it was the upstart taking out the established. Miki and Hofmeister looked a bit nervous all day as they seemed destined to advance to the big final against each other. However, it did not come to be as Miki ended on top of the podium and Hofmeister in third.

The win clinched the first ever PGS crystal globe for Miki after she dominated the standings for most of the season. She ended the season just 31 points ahead of the German. She prevents Hofmeister from winning her sixth PGS globe in a row.

“I am so excited. Last night, I decided that I would win today. I am so grateful to fight with these girls and for the crystal globes. I am speechless, it’s crazy. I am so happy with my riding, I started World Cup when I was 15 years old and wanted the globe for six years, now I don't have words,"Miki said.

It was an easy big final for Miki but not an easy day. Miki nearly lost in the semifinals after she briefly touched the ground on her run only to comeback and edge Lucia Dalmasso (ITA) near the finish.

The win in the big final clinched the PGS globe for Miki as well as the overall championship. She already clinched the PSL globe this season, giving her the sweep on the year. They are the first crystal globes for the young Japanese rising star.

Hofmeister ended the day in third and settled for second in the PGS globe race. It was a rocky day for the German after winning on Saturday.

Hofmeister had a tough first round matchup against former champion Julie Zogg (SUI) but made it through unscathed. Things got a bit nervy in the quarters for the German when she fell behind after a slight stumble. She got a bit of luck in her chase as Zuzana Maderova (CZE) took a hard fall after taking the lead, allowing Hofmeister to advance.

She was then shocked in one of the most stunning results of the season as she lost to Malena Zamfirova (BUL) in the semifinals.

Zamfirova (BUL) amazed the field with her best finish of her young career. The 15-year-old had never finished better than 19th in her previous four career starts and took second on the podium on Sunday. Her brother Tervel Zamfirov (BUL), 20, also matched his best career result on the day with a fourth-place finish on the men's side. He had nothing but praise for his little sister after the race.

"I am so impressed with her. She is breaking records. I have never seen something like this. I talked with the whole World Cup and everyone is amazed by her riding. I could not be more proud that I am part of her preparation and life. To be her mentor and helping her through the final is an amazing feeling for me. It is like a podium for me too, we have a big sibling connection, I don't know how to describe it, it is like magic,"Tervel Zamfirov said.

Behind the leaders, Aleksandra Krol-Walas (POL) missed out on the finals in the final PGS race of the season. Michelle Dekker finsihed second on Saturday but could not advance out of round one on Sunday. Lucia Dalmasso advanced to the semifinals again with a determined run beating Sabine Payer (AUT) in the quarterfinals.

Prommegger spoils Bormolini’s victory celebration

On the men’s side there were great finishes as well. In the big final Maurizio Bormolini (ITA) was set for a victory lap before he raised his crystal globe trophy. Veteran Andreas Prommegger (AUT) said not so fast.

The Austrian pulled off a dramatic comeback and edged Bormolini at the line in a tight finish. It was the second win of the season for Prommegger and 25th of his World Cup career.

“Everything was difficult today. We have to say thank you for those great races, beautiful weather, very nice slope. I didn’t expect these slope (conditions). It was tough, tough riding, against Bormo(lini) it is always tough. I am tired but so, so happy. Yesterday I had bad luck but today was amazing,"Prommegger said.

The win moved Prommegger into second in the PGS standings, 197 points behind Bormolini. Bormolini gets some solace in enjoying his first career crystal globe. He was an unstoppable force on the PGS slope all season.

"It was quite good because Bormo was so dominant all season. I had good races and bad races but had no chance against Bormo. I was third or fourth before this last race and now I am second so I am supper happy with this result,"Prommegger said.

Despite the loss Bormolini was also smiling in the end as he enjoyed the PGS crystal globe victory celebration.

"It's incredible. In the beginning of the season, I did not think it was possible. Today, I gave my best to race and give credit to my season so to finish second was perfect. But the globe is incredible and now I understand people like Roland (Fischnaller) and Andi (Prommegger) who won a lot of these globes and understand when they say it's not a joke to win a globe. I am so happy. I want to wish for every athlete to have a chance to win this globe because the emotions are huge,"Bormolini said.

Radoslav Yankov (BUL) ended the season in third in the PGS race. He did not start on Sunday.

Sango Lee (KOR) was knocked out in the quarterfinals by his teammate Sangkyum Kim (KOR). Kim took third to round out the podium, his second podium of the season.

Yesterday’s winner Roland Fischnaller (ITA) missed out on qualifying for the finals on Sunday and Edwin Coratti (ITA) was knocked out in round one.

The VISA FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup ends with one more event in Winterberg, Germany. The snowboarders will compete in the final PSL race on March 15. Eight men have a mathematical chance at the PSL globe. Bormolini cannot be caught for the overall title and has already clinched the championship. Miki is also already the women's PSL champion. There will then be the second mixed team event of the season on March 16 to wrap the World Cup season before the World Championships in Switzerland in late March.
