It is with deepest condolences that the FIS family acknowledges the tragic passing of Israel Planas, head coach of the Spanish snowboard cross team.

Planas family informed his federation RFEDI (Real Federación Española Deportes de Invierno) that the 41-year-old had suffered a stroke Wednesday morning back home in Barcelona, and that he had been brought to the hospital in critical conditions. But today, at 4 PM CET, Planas passed away.

Israel was a tremendous personality and a great torchbearer for the sport of snowboard cross, and his successes within the sport - most recently with a double silver medal-winning performance for his athletes in the snowboard cross and snowboard cross team events on home soil at the Sierra Nevada 2017 Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships - will not be soon forgotten.

Being a former athlete himself, he has been competing in five World Cup events and represented his country at the 1997 FIS Snowboard World Championships in San Candido, Italy.

Our thoughts are with Israel’s family and friends, and with RFEDI at this difficult time.
