Cervinia, ITA - Finally some good news for the FIS snowboard cross World Cup tour this week, as it was announced on Wednesday that an extra competition will be added to the Cervinia (ITA) programme in late December to make up for the Montafon (AUT) event that was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Originally slated to be the season-opener, the two Montafon competitions - one standard format and one team event - were called off this week when it was deemed that there would be insufficient snow to build a course suitable for World Cup SBX competitions.

Fortunately, Cervinia is having no such snow struggles, and the Italian organizers offered to hold a second competition at the venue on December 22. Along with the originally scheduled December 21 competition, we'll now see back-to-back days of SBX World Cup action taking place under the shadow of the Matterhorn just before the holiday break.

With the various national teams seeking to earn valuable points and establish their top riders ahead of February's Utah 2019 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle & Freeski World Championships, all early season competitions are critical to such decisions, making the additional Cervinia race an important announcement indeed.

"We are very pleased that the organizer in Cervinia, together with the Italian Federation were able to add another race," said FIS Snowboard Race Director Uwe Beier, "It's just a few weeks to go before the World Championships in Park City/Solitude (USA), and the teams need these competitions to get prepared. The organizers in Cervinia worked hard to successfully host their premiere World Cup race last season with challenging snow conditions, and with much more snow there this season we expect to see an excellent course and an excellent competition."
