Monday Mix - April 13, 2020
Apr 13, 2020·Snowboard CrossHi, hello, and welcome to the Easter Monday edition of the Mix! With quarantine and #stayhome protocols in place around a good chunk of the world for now (and the foreseeable future 😬), this holiday weekend has felt a little different than normal for most of us who would typically be spending time with our family and friends, but hopefully you managed to connect with those you love one way or the other.
However, if you did get stuck at home having a holiday dinner for one, maybe you managed to at least make it interesting like Seb Toots, who took the long way from the front door to the dining room table before digging in. The floor is lava but dinner is served, and you're gonna want to get it while it's hot...
Back home in Switzerland the world's preminant halfpipe troubador Pat Burgener used a little movie magic to build an audience for one of his songs while in self-isolation. Unfortunately, it turns out every other version of himself is a terrible listener, and actually kind of rude. Nice tune though!
Canada's Liam Brearley is quickly rising up the ranks with his unique style and ever-evolving back of tricks, and landed on the podium at the final slopestyle competition of the season in Calgary for his first-ever World Cup podium. And like pretty much all of us, the 17-year-old has made it clear he's missing the shred pretty hard right now...
However, it looks like Brearley's setting up to use the downtime constructively, starting an Instagram live show to chat with pro boardriders - and he's looking to run the show an ambitious 3x per week, beginning with his Canada Snowboard teammate Mikey Cicerelli today. In fact, they're probably going live on his channel just as we're hitting publish on today's Mix...
Brearley's not the only athlete setting up to fill the Instagram airwaves with some original snowboard content, as Austrian alpine ripper Alexander Payer has also taken the initiative to start his own interview show. Calling it #SnowboardersTalk, Payer's planning to focus on the carving side of things, and already yesterday he went live with his first show featuring US veteran Robbie Burns. Hit up his Insta profile for more info and tune in next week for episode #2...
Speaking of carving, nobody ripped the gates better than Germany's Ramona Hofmeister last year, and this flashback to the team event at Bad Gastein (AUT) illustrates that fact perfectly. Check out the gap Hofmeister opens up for her teammate Stefan Baumeister, who pretty much just needs to pull out of the start and keep it clean to bring home the first of their two PRT victories on the season...
Great Britain's Katie Ormerod made history this past season by becoming the first rider ever to win a FIS Snowboard crystal globe while repping the Union Jack, and for that we honoured her with one of our #topmoments of the 2019/20 season. Today she reminded us one more time just how ripping of a season she had with this beauty of a third-place run from a perfect day of competition at the Laax Open back in January...
Meanwhile, SBX ripper and Olympic silver medallist Jarryd Hughes of Australia was also looking back to some better times this week, remembering his last World Cup win in Montafon at the start of the 2017/18 season in what was a stacked big final heat. Not too often you see someone go toe-to-toe with Pierre Vaultier (FRA) and walk away with the win, but there was no backing down by Hughes in this one...
Lots of amazing stuff here from the US squad as they look back at their Top 10 moments of the 2019/20 halfpipe competition season...
An inspiring move from Mark McMorris, who donated $5000 to Canadian organization ConquerCovid19.ca and challenged other Canadian sports and entertainment figures to do the same...
And we'll leave you with a little wholesome Easter content to finish things off here, first from Germay's Silvia Mittermuel, who partook in a little old-fashioned egg painting with her boyfriend Leone Guetala this weekend...
And finally this from GBR's Matty McCormick, who took things many, many steps further and straight-up turned his head into the egg with this extremely questionable and entirely hilarious haircut decision...
Kudos for your commitment to #goodcontent, Matty!
And, happy Easter to all! We'll see ya next week.
❤️
