SBX World Cup finals coming up in Veysonnaz
Mar 12, 2020·Snowboard CrossThe final stop on the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup tour yet again in 2019/20, Switzerland’s Veysonnaz resort, has established itself as the most long-standing and dependable stop on the SBX circuit, having hosted World Cup competition nearly every season back to 2009/2010, during which time the resort has been the scene of the World Cup finals twice.
And it’s no wonder that Veysonnaz has been such a go-to venue for SBX action once one lays eyes on the Swiss course. Big, fast, and technical all at once, Veysonnaz demands the best out of the riders in every run, from qualifiers through to the big final. This season’s grand finale in Switzerland should be grand indeed!
Please note that the finals have been moved to Friday, March 13 at 13:30 CET.
Where are we at with the World Cup standings on the women’s side?
After the last competition in sunny Sierra Nevada (ESP), we saw France’s Chloe Trespeuch claim her first World Cup win this season, Michela Moioli (ITA) made it to the second spot and rounding out the podium was Belle Brockhoff (AUS).
While Trespeuch is not in the mix for the fight over the SBX Crystal Globe, the latter two athletes are.
Moioli, with her second spot in Sierra Nevada managed to keep her leader bib on, which she earned after the second World Cup competition of the season on home soil in Cervinia. The Italian Olympic Champion has made it on every single World Cup podium this season, finishing each competition either with a win or a second place.
She has now a total of 4.400 points, which is 900 more than Belle Brockhoff with 3.500 points and in third rank is Eva Samkova with a total of 2.710 points, who crashed in the big final in Spain, taking he out of the fight over the top spot of the podium that day and definitely also for some valuable World Cup points.
That means, that the fight for the Crystal Globe is still open, because Moioli’s margin of points is big, but not yet a sealed deal. Moioli’s World Cup start in Veysonnaz will be her 50th one in her career and she for now has a record of 29 podium spots so far and if she can win the overall World Cup, it will be the third time in her career to achieve this success.
As we all know however, in snowboard cross things are unpredictable, we will just have to wait and see who will be the lucky one at the end of the day standing on top of the podium to raise the Crystal Globe into the air.
Can Haemmerle defend his title?
The men’s fight over the Crystal Globe is definitely also going to be one to watch. As Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle took the second place in Spain’s Sierra Nevada behind Spanish home hero Lucas Eguibar and with Paul Berg (GER) rounding out the podium, Haemmerle took enough points to earn back the yellow leader bib.
Lorenzo Sommariva, who had been World Cup leader up until the last competition, ended up winning the small final in Spain, getting in fifth position, but not earning enough points to keep the leader bib.
All season, it has been a battle between Haemmerle and Sommariva, as they took turns on the top spot of the World Cup ranking. The Austrian now has a margin of only 10 points, which really is not a lot. He has a total of 2.960, whereas Sommariva is super close behind him with 2.950 points.
Haemmerle could claim his second SBX Crystal Globe win after last year’s huge success. In general, the 26-year-old has not finished worse than among the top 3 in the World Cup ranking ever since 2016.
For Sommariva however, this could be the very first Crytal Globe win of his career.
Sitting in third rank for now is Omar Visintin (ITA) with a total of 2.130 points. But we also have Austria’s Jakob Dusek with 2.110 points in fourth rank wanting to take the top spots of the World Cup ranking. As the point differences are super tight, nothing is decided yet, therefore this is definitely a fight that you don’t want to miss!
Veysonnaz title defenders from March 2019: Eva Samkova (CZE) and Lucas Eguibar (ESP).
Last year’s SBX Crystal Globe winners: Eva Samkova (CZE) and Alessandro Haemmerle (AUT).
We will be going straight to finals on March 13 at 13:30 CET sharp.
