Monday Mix - June 7, 2021

Eguibar vs. Haemmerle in the men's photofinish of the year at Idre Fjall @ GEPA/Daniel Goetzhaber

A week into June and it feels like the stream of content coming through the line is flowing harder than a glacial river in the spring melt. Between high-alpine spring camps, throwbacks to midseason, Southern Hemisphere resort openings, and summer shenanigans, there was no shortage of fun to dig into this week.

First up though is some big news on our side, as for the first time in 23 years, FIS has elected a new President. Johan Eliasch was elected in a first-round majority at last week's 52nd FIS Congress online and will take over from outgoing President Gian Franco Kasper, and we're excited to see what the future holds under Mr. Eliasch's leadership.

Now onto the Mix, where the human highlight reel Nicolas Huber donned his signature spacesuit and set his coordinates for a rocket ride to the sun. Unfortunately there seemed to be a little problem at lift-off, and he had to settle for an early splash-landing in the lake and some polite applause from the audience...

The clip above was edited by Clemens Millauer, who's been a busy man lately, most notably with his SELFMADE Park project at Turracher Hoehe in Austria. Designing and building a park, shredding, filming and cutting edits - Millauer's certainly been making the most of his off-season. Peep the full edit from SELFMADE below, where Clemens, Anna Gasser, and friends lay a full-scale beatdown on the set-up. That first-shot frontboard Danish 450 by Anna is just...*chef's kiss*.

A lot of boardslide underflip variations in that clip, which reminds us that Cool Wakishima dropped a throwback heater of her own last week, as she looks forward to Cardrona opening up for the season very soon down in NZL...

Speaking of build-your-own parks, SBX legend Pierre Vaultier teased a little something over on his instagram profile yesterday, with a shovel in hand and a perfectly shaped snowcube behind him. Is this going to be the sequel to his legendary "Ultimate Pump Track" video from a few years ago? We hope so, but no matter what it ends up being we're just stoked to see Pierre back on snow after his injury-induced retirement last season...

Just in case you forgot or somehow missed the legendary pump track clip we mentioned above, over the weekend Redbull was kind enough to throw it back to that unbelievable set-up on their IG page...

Sticking with SBX for a moment here, did you get a chance to check out our best women's and men's photofinishes of the season on our IG page? The fans voted, we listened, and now two unreal finish fights are live for your viewing pleasure...

Back to the legends + injuries thing for a second, as last week Shaun White revealed that he recently went under the knife to "clean up" some lingering knee problems. Will this affect the 3x gold medallist's bid for a fifth Olympic Winter Games appearance next season, or will the halfpipe GOAT pull it together to fly the Stars and Stripes in Beijing and add one more epic chapter to his life story? Stay tuned to find out...

Ok, back to shredding, because there was plenty of it to take in last week - including Zeb Powell putting down this slushy heater of a line at what looks like a deserted Woodward Copper spring park. People, if Zeb is on site we recommend you pull up a chair and take a look-see, because the man does not miss. That front dub 10 is a mind-blower...

Also catching our eye was Su Yiming, as he got busy reinterpreting some features at the massive Chengdu indoor slope in China last week. Hand-drags and dicey side-hits galore in this one...

Although she missed out on any podiums in 2020/21 after winning the slopestyle crystal globe in 2019/20, Katie Ormerod remains one of the absolute best doing it right now, and she dropped a quick edit to remind us of that fact as a part of Roxy's #redifineCUTE campaign. Massive dub underflip 9's - cute, but in a seriously tough kind of way...

Halfpipe queen Queralt Castellet has been dropping some extended updates lately and the latest comes to us from Crans Montana, where a perfect pipe and some solid weather let her stack a strong grip of clips as she, like Mr. White, gears up for what should be her fifth Olympic Winter Games next season...

Some sweet, sunset halfpipe goodness from US up-and-comer Joey Okesson now, as he threw it back to warmups at last season's X Games in Aspen...

Feeling thankful that Moritz Boll didn't just throw away his "leftover" Audi Nines footage...

And now, apropos of absolutely nothing, we've got the James brothers Scotty and Sean facing off against Scotty's girlfriend Chloe in a not-so-epic dance battle. The consensus here seems to be that the boys win, although the two-against-one nature of the fight makes it seem a little unfair to us...

"Apropos" you say? How about "inappropriate," like showing up to the downhill trails on your road bike like Alexander Payer?

We started this week's Mix off with a splash and that's just how we're gonna end it, with Clemence Grimal taking a little dip just metres away from successful pond skim at Les Deux Alpes. Mondays, amirite?

Enjoy the week, y'all and we'll see you back here soon...
