Bakuriani 2023 Ski Cross World Championships ready to go

The highlight of the 2022/23 FIS Ski Cross season the Bakuriani 2023 FIS Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships are going down from 19 February till 05 March 2023. After we saw some exciting racing at the other disciplines, it’s finally time for the ski cross athletes to fight for the medals from 24 – 26 February 2023 in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in Bakuriani, Georgia.
On 24 February the qualification will go down at 14:00 LOC / 11:00 CET for the women and at 14:35 LOC / 11:35 CET for the men.
The best 32 men and the best 16 women will fight for the medals on 26 February at 10:30 LOC / 07:30 CET.
For the first time in ski cross history there will also be a team event at the world championships this year which will take place on 26 February at 14:30 LOC / 11:30 CET. One team exists of one woman and one man of the same nation. The format is the same knock-out format as for the single event. The only difference is that once the first team-competitors are in the finish, the second team competitors will start with time delay registered by the first team competitors. A maximum “penalty time” applies in the case that the first competitor “Did Not Finish” (DNF) the course or the competitor’s time difference from the winner in the finish exceeds the maximum time delay. Men go first, then women.
Whom to watch
Women:
Sandra Naeslund (SWE), our reigning World Champion from 2021, current World Cup leader and Beijing 2022 Olympic Champion. She is unbeaten for over 14 month and won all races this season so far.
Marielle Thompson (CAN), Beijing 2022 Olympic silver medallist and currently second in the overall world cup ranking. Thompson stood on the podium for five times this season so far. In fact, she got second for three times and third for two times.
Fanny Smith (SUI), Beijing 2022 Olympic bronze medallist and silver medallist at the last World Championships in 2021. She currently is in third position in the overall ranking and stood on the podium for three times this season. Smith is also the one who one the test event here in Bakuriani two years ago.
Daniela Maier (GER), Beijing 2022 Olympic bronze medallist and fourth in the overall ranking. The German already stood on the podium for five times this season, whereof one was a second and the others were third places.
Men:
Reece Howden (CAN). Also, the tall Canadian only stood on the podium twice, with one victory in Innichen and one in Sweden he is the current world cup leader on the men’s side.
David Mobaerg (SWE) is not only second in the overall world cup ranking but also got second in the test event in 2021 here in Georgia. Next to this, he stood on the podium three times this season, whereof two have been victories.
Florian Wilmsmann (GER) won the test event here in Bakuriani (GEO) two years ago. He currently is in fourth position in the overall ranking as he already won three small finals this season.
Youri Duplessis Kergomard (FRA) already got second this season for two times and showed some strong skiing with good training times the last two days on the world champions course.
So, let’s see especially on the men’s side who will be the new World Champions 2023 and fingers crossed, that the weather develops in the right direction and there will be less wind for race days than we had it for the first two training days.
