Sandro Siebenhofer announces retirement

Austrian ski cross athlete Sandro Siebenhofer has decided to end his ski cross career. At just 26 years old, Siebenhofer leaves behind a promising journey marked by notable achievements and unfortunate injuries. With six top ten finishes in 42 World Cup races, his best result was a commendable seventh place at the home World Cup event in Reiteralm in February 2021.

Siebenhofer's talent was evident early on when he claimed the gold medal at the 2016 Junior World Championships in Val Thorens, France. Two years later, he secured a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Cardrona, New Zealand. However, his recent career has been plagued by unfortunate injuries. Towards the end of 2021, he suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee during a training fall on the Reiteralm. Unfortunately, upon his comeback in January this year at a European Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland, he suffered yet another cruciate ligament tear, this time in his right knee.

"The first cruciate ligament tear didn't dampen my motivation, but the second injury really took a toll on me. After careful consideration, I have decided to retire," Siebenhofer explained. He plans to complete his studies in psychology and pursue a career as a ski trainer.

Reflecting on his career, Siebenhofer expressed gratitude towards his team, whom he considered a second family. He felt extremely comfortable throughout his journey, first in the European Cup and later in the World Cup. He extended his thanks to the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV), his coaches, and supervisors for their unwavering support. Siebenhofer also emphasized his intention to keep a close eye on his former teammates, demonstrating his continued passion for the sport.

"Sandro Siebenhofer demonstrated immense potential with his gold and silver medals at the Junior World Championships. Unfortunately, his World Cup aspirations were hindered by knee injuries. With his affable nature, Sandro played a vital role in our team. On behalf of the entire ÖSV ski cross team, I wish him all the best in his personal and professional future," said Markus Gutenbrunner, the sports director for ski cross in the ÖSV.

Sandro Siebenhofer's retirement marks the end of a promising career that was unfortunately cut short by injuries. As he embarks on a new chapter in his life, we wish Sandro Siebenhofer success and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.
